License plates are the first thing you see when you come into K & L Barbecue in Hopewell. Hundreds of them are hanging on the walls. “The customers bring them in, you know,” says Linda Purdie, who owns the restaurant with her husband, Kenneth (K & L stands for Kenneth and Linda). “That one’s from Iraq,” she remarks about a license plate in Arabic. “So the flag on the wall, that was brought by a customer who had been to Iraq.”

It’s easy to see why so many people from so many places visit K & L when they pass through Hopewell. Their succulent, tangy Virginia-style barbecue is some of the best in the area, the waitresses serve it with a smile, and they’re always quick to strike up friendly conversation with guests. Even the sides are spectacular. “A lot of the vegetables we serve, we get fresh from our customer’s gardens,” Linda says. Everything at K & L is about you, the customer, so come on down and be a part of their restaurant family!

Four generations are operating a beautiful 800-acre dairy farm and creamery in western Dinwiddie County that has been operating since the mid-1700s. Their fresh from the cow milk and ice cream is available in the new creamery. The family-owned Richlands Dairy Farm has been a fixture on Route 460 in Blackstone for many years. It now reaches new heights of popularity with the opening of the Creamery. How can you possibly pass by this new landmark without stopping for a delicious ice-cream in a freshly made waffle cone? Their mission and vision are summed up in “Honest to Goodness Dairy”. What does that mean? They are transparent in their operation, taking care of their cows with the highest of standards, installing large windows for visitors to look through to the milk plant, conducting tours of the farm so that everyone can see exactly what they are doing. Not only that, a very important part of their mission is giving back to their community as they commit to giving away one gallon of milk to a needy family or to a food bank for every 10 that they sell. Commendable business practices and. oh, my…. the ice-cream is AMAZING! And you can order country style delicious food for lunch and dinner. Be sure to try it!

October is Fall Festival and every weekend, so get everybody in the car and tour the farm, go on a hayride, select your pumpkin, navigate a corn maze, milk a cow, have some ice cream and really see what farm life and a creamery is like. Group tours can be scheduled during May – October and watch the calendar for Dinners on the Dairy. This is a VA farm that’s all about using Virginia products.

Very unique space in an old converted shipping container – great ribs – Southern Living ranked it among the best BBQ in the south (2012) – couple of tables outside – grab a sandwich – barbecued pork or chicken and a moon pie – “open rain or shine”

Barbecue is pretty much a major food group in this part of the country. When Saucy’s originally opened in 2010 out of a shipping container, they introduced a refreshing new take on this culinary category. Just ask the pitmaster, Erich Wolfgang. He says that his BBQ style is influenced from all parts of the country thanks to his days traveling with a band that included Saucy’s owner Tom McCormack. While touring, he made notes about his favorite eats. Fast forward a few years and here is all that influence and hard work, in Saucy’s. Whether you want a pork sandwich and some fries, or ribs with all the sides, you are sure to love your meal in either location.Vegans are in luck too, as they serve delicious Tofu Tacos with a spicy mango sauce and their signature coleslaw. There’s no mayo in the coleslaw here, it’s just flavored with pineapple, jalapeno pepper and cilantro which is a really interesting take on this staple BBQ side. Be sure to order other sides too such as the seasoned fries, beans or mac and cheese. There is also a bar at each location that serve a variety of craft beers and a small selection of wine. In warmer months, you can enjoy your meal on the patio. Saucy’s also offers catering.

Voted as one of the top twenty places in the South for a pork barbecue sandwich by Southern Living magazine, people are coming all over for a taste of Saucy’s Barbecue.

The restaurant serves pork, beef, chicken, and ribs, but it owes its name to its savory, perfectly-blended barbecue sauce. Most Saucy’s customers leave with a pint or two of this delicious concoction to take home with them, so they can experience the succulent taste of Saucy’s long after their visit has ended.

For seafood and comfort food lovers – this is the place for you! Located in the iconic, stunning and historic Farmers Market building in the heart of Old Town Petersburg and self-described as “The Soul of Seafood”, Croaker’s Spot serves a variety of seafood dishes, in very generous portions. Not a fish lover? No problem, there are also plenty of other options for you on the extensive menu. Other highlights include the delicious homemade lemonade and limeade, along with the incredible cornbread. Save room for some Bread Pudding too!

“A lot of people think the place is named after the fish called croaker, but it’s not,” says Neverett Eggleston III, owner of Croaker’s Spot restaurant. “Croaker was a man from Jackson Ward who moved up to Harlem and opened a restaurant he called Croaker’s Spot. His story inspired me, and that’s one of the reasons we call our place Croaker’s Spot.”

Eggleston, who comes from a family of restaurateurs, is unequivocal when asked what the best dish in his restaurant is: “The Eggleston’s Fried Fish Boat, served smothered in green peppers and onions with steamed red potatoes and hot cornbread dipped in our hot-buttered soul sauce washed down with lemonade!” But the renowned seafood dishes aren’t all Croaker’s Spot has to offer: they serve a selection of scrumptious sandwiches and breakfast dishes all day.

“As a restaurateur, it’s hard to beat Old Towne; the cobblestone streets, the restaurant community, the antique shops…you just gotta fall in love with what you see down here!” Eggleston says. “And I think we fit in well because we built up from scratch – all our food is homemade, and we serve it with that good Southern hospitality.”

The Dixie is a longstanding favorite local diner in Old Towne Petersburg. In this current location since 1939, despite changes of ownership during that time, it continues to serve delicious made from scratch Southern comfort food. Charlie and Frannie Rawlings are the current owners and carried out a beautiful renovation which honors the diner’s rich history. The famous Dixie Dog is a red hot dog topped with chili, just one of the many items on their extensive menu. If you want to enjoy breakfast on a Saturday morning, you’ll likely have to wait. Folks flock here for Biscuits and Gravy, Omelets, Grits, Country Ham with Fried Apples and Eggs amongst other classic breakfast items. At lunchtime, you can enjoy everything from Liver and Onions to Chicken and Dumplings to Fried Catfish to Salads as well as great Burgers and Sandwiches. They offer a wide variety of sides such as collard greens and macaroni and cheese. Whatever you do, save room for dessert! The recipe for the Peanut Butter Pie was given to Frannie by Charlie’s mother and it is a little slice of heaven. Visitors will experience fine southern hospitality and great homestyle cooking here.

Enjoy the homemade foods of the south – buffet dining in a relaxed family atmosphere.

The post Nanny’s Southern Style Restaurant appeared first on The Best Part of Virginia.

This 35-year-old restaurant couldn’t be more classically Southern. Founded and owned by the Stewart family the entire time, this much-beloved establishment serves up great Barbecue Pork, Brisket and St. Louis-style Ribs along with all the favorite sides that you can imagine. Ronnie Stewart had always dreamed of owning a restaurant while serving in the Prince George County Police Department. He achieved that dream, even before he retired from the Police Department, thanks to his wife Linda taking the helm from the start. Sons Tim and Jeff ultimately joined the business too. Together they all continue to serve delicious food both at the restaurant, and through catering.

The family describes their barbecue as a Virginia/Carolina blend (Ronnie Stewart hails from South Carolina). They use a mixture of hardwoods to smoke the meat for 14 to 15 hours. The sauce is homemade and is the same one that Ronnie and Linda concocted 35 years ago. Interestingly, they use the sauce when cooking the Ribs which often baffles customers as they say it tastes different from the sauce they know. However, when cooked, the vinegar in the sauce evaporates resulting in a much sweeter taste.

Nanny’s is not only known for their barbecue, but also their Fried Chicken. It’s so legendary that once a serious fan was craving it so much during her pregnancy that she got in her car and drove all the way from Georgia to get some! Their Sweet Tea is also hugely popular.

When you ask the family what they love best about our region, the answer is simple: the people. So many locals have grown up with Nanny’s being an integral part of their lives. For out-of-towners, they say that some folks plan their vacations around their opening hours! With such easy proximity to I-95, it’s a great stop off point for some terrific local food if you’re traveling.

Prince George Family Barbecue is a home-style family restaurant that offers its customers succulent, melt-in-your-mouth pork and beef barbecue soaked in sweet and tangy sauce, served alongside Southern sides like collard greens, mac and cheese, or sweet potato tots.

Apart from their lunch and dinner menus, however, they also offer a full breakfast spread. Prince George Family Barbecue has everything from egg omelets to fried sea trout on its morning menu, ensuring that its customers get a jump on the day with a satisfying breakfast and a full stomach.

Of course, the best part of any barbecue is its sauce, and Prince George Family Barbecue Sauce is rich, zesty, and flavorful. Don’t just take our word for it, either: it was voted “World’s Best Bar-B-Q Sauce” at the Great Smokey Mountain Bar-B-Q Cook-Off four separate times. With a record like this, it has to be good!

In addition to their Prince George and Chesterfield locations, they also offer catering for parties and events.
