At the corner of North Market Street and Grove Avenue in Petersburg are the remains of what is quite possibly the oldest building in the city – Peter Jones Trading Station. Estimated to have been built between 1650 and 1750 it served as a trading station. During the Civil War, the building served alternately as a prison and a hospital. Most of the building was destroyed by a fire in the 1980s.
