Presented by Henricus Historical Park

Did you know that the property on which Henricus is located was once Henry Cox’s plantation, which was overrun by Gen. Butler’s Union soldiers in 1864? Historian John Pagano will share with you Mr. Cox’s story: his wealth, his vast holdings, the large enslaved population on his plantation, as well as the military operations and the engineering of the Dutch Gap Canal. He will share numerous maps and images to assist in telling the story of the civilians and soldiers who experienced the Civil War in this area. The talk will conclude with a short walk to the exhumed graveyard that once held the dead of both white and black soldiers of General Butler’s Army who were killed on the property. The lecture will be held in the Henricus Church and doors will open at 6:30pm. Ticket holders will receive a free pass to visit and tour Henricus Historical Park (must be used within 90 days of the lecture).
