The 10-hour Battle of the Crater, which occurred on July 30, 1864, is one of the most famous events occurring during the Siege of Petersburg.  Petersburg National Battlefield will be offering special programs on July 27 & 28 at the Eastern Front re:  this battle.  From 9:30 am – 4:30 pm on July 27 & from 10:30 am – 3:00 pm on July 28, at the Eastern Front Visitor Center, Living Historians will have displays on the Civil War experience during the Siege.  There will also be an interactive map program about the Battle of the Crater.  At the Eastern Front Tour Stop 8 on July 27, from 10 am – 4:30 pm, the programs offered will be:  United States Colored Troops at Petersburg, Alfred Waud, Civil War Sketch Artist, Artillery Demonstrations, Infantry Demonstrations, and Ranger-led Programs.  On July 28, from 10:30 am – 3:00 pm, the same programs will be offered except there will be no artillery demonstrations.

It is strongly suggested that you bring water, wear sunscreen, and dress for the weather.  Restrooms will be available.  Programs will be held weather permitting.
