This beautiful park is a popular destination for hiking (3 miles of Canal trail), bird watching, canoeing, kayaking, and whitewater rafting. There is a fishing pier, natural shoreline, play equipment for children, a picnic shelter, and there is a gravel Canal kayak launch area. Plenty of parking.

The Colonial Heights Appomattox River Trail is an open space corridor along the Appomattox River from Roslyn Landing Park to the western city boundary, approximately two miles in length. The trail is hard-surfaced for passive and active users, and includes: picnic tables & benches, gazebo, fishing areas, small boat & canoe launch at Roslyn Landing Park, and spur trails and linkages to beautiful points of interest.

It’s a great place to enjoy nature along the river. Open dawn to dusk.

Appomattox River Trail

The Appomattox River is a popular destination for whitewater rafting, canoeing, fishing, bird watching, hiking, walking and boating. It flows from Lake Chesdin through the region and joins the James River at Hopewell, where the two rivers once served as the pathway for early English settlers into Virginia, and became the largest port in the nation during the Civil War.

The Friends of the Lower Appomattox River (FOLAR) has developed a series of Blueways (navigable water) and Greenways (hiking trails) that reveal the beauty of the Appomattox River.

James River National Wildlife Refuge

Reconnect with the great outdoors on this beautiful property that is great for wildlife viewing taking you through marshes and hardwood forests. Every day the Powell Creek Trail is open from sunrise to sunset offering up 1.5 miles that meanders along freshwater marshes and tidally influenced creeks. You will see beautiful flowers, bald eagles, osprey, great blue herons, mammals, amphibians and invertebrates. There are also observation platforms and interpretive signs.

You will need to call the office for hunting or canoeing/kayaking permits. There are white-tailed deer hunting seasons for archery, muzzleloaders and shotguns by permit.

Guided canoe tours are offered in the spring and fall and the Great Backyard Bird Count is held in February.

Pocahontas Island

Pocahontas Island, actually a peninsula, was originally platted in 1749. Once a warehouse and wharf-filled urban landscape, it is where the first enslaved Africans were brought to work. In the 19th century, Pocahontas became a Freedom Colony, the first predominately free black settlement in Virginia and by 1860, one of the largest in the nation. The Pocahontas Island Black History Museum is an amazing collection of artifacts collected by John Stewart, who was born on Pocahontas Island in 1943 and known as The Mayor of Pocahontas. On the National Register of Historic Places. Museum (225 Witten St.) open by appointment. There is a public park with picnic shelter, 0.5 miles of the Appomattox River Trail and a natural canoe/kayak launch.

White Bank Park

The park consists of 22 acres which overlook Swift Creek, and is located across from Tussing Elementary School. The park includes two picnic pavilions which accommodate 200 ‐ 300 people each, 8 individual picnic shelters for smaller groups, restrooms, 18-hole disc golf course, beach volleyball court, boat ramp, fishing pier and public playground.

Lake Chesdin Boat Landing

Lake Chesdin is a 3,100-acre water supply reservoir on the Chesterfield-Dinwiddie County line. It is administered by the Appomattox River Water Authority. Lake Chesdin offers excellent largemouth bass and catfish fishing and good crappie fishing in the spring and fall. The park has two fishing piers, one handicapped accessible, and a canoe/kayak boat slide.
